Asheville police review surveillance videos,
plan follow-up arrests for “Reclaim the Streets” festival

By Robert Brown

Asheville, May 30– According to reports by Mickey Mahaffey, a declared candidate for the office of mayor, Lt. Jon Kirkpatrick of the Asheville Police force has stated that the police are considering making additional arrests following a review of their video footage of a street festival that took place on May 21. Eleven people have already been arrested, out of approximately 100 protesters in the streets.

Mahaffey talked with Lt. Kirkpatrick on the afternoon of May 30.

Most of the public comment so far has focused on allegations of police misconduct.

If the police follow through with additional arrests, it will mark an escalation of police tactics in dealing with the recent wave of public protests which resist the subordination of the public to corporate interests.
