Subcomandante Marcos speaks on the mobilization against neoliberalism in Cancun, Mexico

Sept. 13-- Brothers and sisters of Mexico and of the world who are in Cancun at this mobilization against neoliberalism: Greetings from the men, women, children and old ones of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation. We are honored that, in the midst of your meetings, agreements and mobilizations, you are making a place to listen to our words. The world movement against the globalization of death and destruction is being most brilliantly embodied today in Cancun.

Close by to where this mobilization is being held, a handful of slaves of money are agreeing to the forms and the timeframes for continuing the lucrative crime of globalization.

The difference between them and all of us is not in their bags and ours. Even though their bags are overflowing with coins and ours with hope. No, the difference is not in the wallets, but in the heart. You and I have a tomorrow in our hearts which is yet to come, that is, which is yet to be built. They have only a past which they want to repeat forever and ever.

We have life, they have death. We are fighting for humanity, they are fighting for neoliberalism. We want liberty, they want to make us slaves.

It is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that those who think they are the owners of the planet have had to hide behind high walls and their pathetic security forces in order to make their plans.

Like in a war, the high command of that Transnational Army which is planning on conquering the world in the only way it is possible to conquer it — that is, by destroying it — is meeting under a security system as large as its fear.

While previously the powerful met behind the world’s back in order to plot their future wars and expropriations, today they must do so not only in front of everyone, but also, now, against thousands in Cancun and millions on the entire Earth.

Because that is what this all has to do with. With a war. With a war against humanity.

The globalization of those above is nothing other than a world plot which feeds on blood and excretes dollars. And, in the complex scales which translate deaths into dollars, there is a group of human beings who are valued at a very low price in the global butcher shop.

We are the indigenous, the young people, the women, the children, the old ones, the homosexuals, the lesbians, the migrants, the different. That is, the great majority of humanity. The World War of the powerful wants to turn Planet Earth into an exclusive club, reserving for itself the right to admission. For the powerful, all of us have the choice of being inside that exclusive area, but as servants, or of remaining outside the world, or life. But we do not have to obey and choose between living as servants or dying.

A new path can be built — one where living is living with dignity. One where living is living with liberty. Building that alternative is possible, and it is necessary. That alternative is necessary because the future of humanity depends on it. That future is at stake in all the corners of each one of the five continents. And that alternative is possible because there are people throughout the world who know quite well that “liberty” is a verb which is either conjugated plurally or it will be nothing but a poor alibi for cynicism.

Brothers and sisters: There is a fight going on all over the world between two globalization plans. The one of above, which globalizes conformity, cynicism, stupidity, war, destruction, death, forgetting. And the one of below which globalizes rebellion, hope, creativity, intelligence, imagination, life, memory, the building of a world where all worlds fit. A world with... Democracy! Liberty! Justice!
