AGR Fall Fund Drive

AGR is depending on you.

As of this writing, Asheville Global Report has just about $100 in the bank. With this $100, we need to pay the printer for the paper you’re reading. The printer asks $253.59 each week for its services. We also need to pay the post office to distribute the paper to people in other cities across the US. Our postage costs run anywhere from $100 to $140 every week.

Looks like we’re short about $275.

It’s a grim situation, and not an unfamiliar one. We find ourselves in this kind of pickle nearly every week by the time our biannual fundraisers come around.

Asheville Global Report’s financial needs are not excessive. We don’t have a staff to pay, because every staff member donates her or his time. We don’t pay our writers or photographers; they too, work for free. And the wonderful people at the Asheville Community Resource Center provide us with our office space, rent free. All of these factors allow us to keep our expenses very low.

The fact remains, however, that we do still have expenses. We do need to print every week, we have to pay for postage for distribution, and we also pay for internet, phone, newswire access, and other such requirements. Our yearly budgetary needs are met through the one or two grants we receive (in the years we receive them), the local business owners, organizations, and individuals who pay to advertise with us, the benefits we have throughout the year… and you, our readers.

We depend on you in a very real way to make sure we can keep printing. Please don’t doubt that every donation you make to keep AGR going is doing exactly that. We are tremendously grateful for the support our readers have always offered. The Asheville Global Report would not be able to keep putting out the news every week without your help.

During our fall fundraiser, you’ll have a number of opportunities to help AGR and have a good time doing it. Our first benefit, AGR Film Night, is coming up on Thurs., Oct. 9. We’ll be showing a film in which Michael Moore discusses the censorship of his book, Stupid White Men, as well as Unprecedented, an Indymedia film about the 2000 presidential election.

We’ll also be having a benefit show on Mon., Oct. 13 at the Asheville Community Resource Center, located at 63 N. Lexington Ave. The show will feature Queerwülf (from Chattanooga), and local bands Resurrectum and Descolada, and will begin at 8:30pm.

Please join us at one or both of these events, and keep your eye out for other upcoming events we’re planning for the month of October.

If the cooler weather is beginning to make you want to curl up at home and hibernate, you can still make a donation. You can send checks and money orders to our PO Box address, and we can now accept donations online through Pay Pal. Just go to our web site at www.agrnews.org and follow the instructions you find there. AGR is a 501(c)3 non-profit, so your donation is tax-deductable; if you donate online and would like to receive a letter of confirmation for tax purposes, please make sure to include your shipping address in the appropriate spot in the online form. And remember, if you make a donation of $25 or more, we would love to send you our booklet of compiled coverage by AGR, The War on Iraq.

Once again, thank you for your continued support. We really couldn’t do it without you.
