‘Freedom and democracy’ and the Bush regime

Editors, Asheville Global Report,

We exercised one of our (remaining) American rights and joined with several dozen others in demonstrating against George Bush’s media-fundraising charade here yesterday... September 9, in Jacksonville, Florida.

Freedom and democracy have little or nothing to do with Bush’s illegal, unilateral invasion of Iraq and America’s continuing occupation that nation.

We’re not willing to have another red-cent of our taxes spent on pumping up the profits of Haliburton or Carlysle... while freedom will remain a foreign word in Iraq.

Under the Bush regime the terms “freedom and democracy” have become mere euphemisms for the expansion of profits for US-based multinational corporations (in their quest for further domination of world resources and markets)... while ignoring the true democratic needs of Americans and foreign peoples.

The goals of the so-called free market are often at odds with the democratic yearnings of people the world over... just look at the shameful history of America’s militaristic adventures!

Look at Vietnam (earlier), Kuwait or Afghanistan ... or go back (still earlier) to Sand Creel or Wounded Knee!

Still no freedom or democracy.

And ... whatever happened to the legitimate search for terrorists such as Osama bin Laden?... the Taliban? al-Qaida?

Rep. Dennis Kucinich, Senator Bob Graham and former Vermont Governor Howard Dean are correct in exposing the fact that Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld lost sight of real terrorists — a threat to Americans — to pursue a risky, dishonest, and dangerous oil adventure in Iraq.

Only a measly $15 billion (of the $87 billion proposed) is earmarked for non-military needs!

In Iraq, we should now transition quickly to UN-multilateral forces with a real intent on freedom & democracy with the Iraqi people in control — or get out!
