Say ‘no’ to occupation

Editors, Asheville Global Report,

Armed men invade a home and kill some of its occupants. For this deed, these men are lauded. Two young men quietly marry local women. For this deed, these men are punished. What is wrong with these pictures? They are part and parcel of the USA’s military occupation of Iraq. People of the world stood up to say “NO” to the war. Now we need to stand up and say “NO” to the occupation.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) (www.unitedforpeace.org) and Act Now to Stop War & End Racism (ANSWER) (www.internationalanswer.org) are joining forces to call on all those who oppose the war, invasion and occupation of Iraq, to unite in Washington, DC at 11am at the Washington Monument.

UFPJ and ANSWER have both organized antiwar demonstrations numbering in the hundreds of thousands in the last year and have now agreed to join forces for the purpose of organizing the Oct. 25 national march on Washington, DC under the banner: End the Occupation of Iraq, Bring the Troops Home Now!

The protest will also condemn the vast cuts in vital domestic social and economic programs and demand: Money for jobs, education & healthcare, not war and occupation. As the Oct. 25-26 weekend is also the second anniversary of the passage of the so-called PATRIOT Act, authorizing political arrests, indefinite detentions, domestic spying, and religious and racial profiling, the demonstration will also be a call to Fight Back Against the PATRIOT Act.

The Western North Carolina Peace Coalition, Veterans for Peace and Asheville War Resisters League will be sponsoring a bus to give Western North Carolinians the opportunity to let America know where we stand. It will leave Friday evening, Oct. 24, and will return either the evening of the 25th or the next morning. We’re asking those who can to pay the full fare of $65 for a seat. For those unable to afford that, a sliding scale is available which could take the price as low as $50. As in the past, scholarships may be available depending on donations made for that purpose. Please reserve your seat as soon as possible to help us get a rough idea of how many are going. Call Ken at 680-9387 or Lena at 350-7934 to sign up!
