FROM THE EDITORS

This past fall we at AGR had our most successful fund drive to date. The success of that fund drive allowed us expand the paper by being able to increase our print run. It has made it possible for us to purchase two new computers, both of which are used on an almost continual basis by AGR writers. But more then that, it allowed us to operate for the last six months, providing roughly 30% of the operating costs during that time.

In other words without a successful fund drive last fall, when AGR supporters donated over nine thousand dollars, AGR would have likely stopped operating in late January. That would have meant that no news outlet in the western North Carolina region would have brought you in-depth factual reports on important world evens like the US sponsored coup in Haiti, and corporate abuses by US war contractors.

You would have missed AGR’s first hand coverage of important local events like the recent anti-gay marriage rally in Asheville, and anti-war protests across the region and world.

This paper, which has become such an important part of the independent media, both in Asheville, and around the country, relies on you, our readers, to sustain this effort.

For this Spring Fund Drive we have had several planned events fall through and simply have not had the time or the people power to get replacements organized. So while we are short on events for people to attend, we are still big on hope.

We hope that many of our readers will still send us whatever they can: those small donations of $5-10 really do add up, and larger donations of $500-700 obviously go a long way for us and are greatly welcomed. If you are planning on making a larger donation ($300 and up) and would like it to go toward something specific, please contact us and see if you are interested in helping us acquire something on our wish list.

We would like to dedicate a portion of the fund drive money to providing our readers with more original coverage from the region, and abroad, but mainly we would like the vote of confidence from our readers that will allow us to continue our efforts without interruption.

In just five years the Asheville Global Report has gone from being a free local info-sheet to an award winning, nationally acclaimed (and still free in Western North Carolina) newspaper. And we would be nowhere without you, our readers and supporters. So please donate now and let us see where the next five years will take us.

Thank You,
