Pitch in to build playground

Editor, Asheville Global Report,

Last November hundreds of folks rallied around building Jones Park playground in north Asheville. In doing so, these amazing volunteers not only built a fantastic place to play but they also built community. Now, I’m not a touchy-feely person, and I don’t want to be accused of using clichés like “building community,” but from what I understand there is no other way to describe what came out of the Jones Park project. Neighbors who had never met became friends, people learned new skills, competing businesses worked together with families, there was food, music and everyone worked hard. This may have been one of the area’s most meaningful events.

For those of you who, like me, missed the Jones Park playground build last year, take heart: you will have another opportunity to participate in this community-building, skills-learning, fun, old-fashioned barn-raising activity. Quality Forward and Asheville Parks and Recreation, thanks to the generosity of the Janirve Foundation, will be building another community playground November 14-19, this time in the south Asheville neighborhood of Royal Pines. Once again we must call on the community to make this event happen. We will need 650 volunteers to work on construction, tool, child care and food crews.

If you want more information on how you can help with this twice-in-a-lifetime opportunity, give me a call at 254-1776!
